Can You Compost Dog Poop?

Canis familiaris waste should be composted, not put into a septic tank. Information technology heats up enough to destroy pathogens and provides nutrients that tin can be utilized in your yard and under your trees. Composting dog waste likewise keeps tons of material from beingness added to a landfill or sewer system that is already overwhelmed.

This article volition explain how to correctly make a compost heap out of your domestic dog'south waste without ownership all of those things other sites are trying to sell you.

How to compost your dogs waste.

How to compost your dogs waste.

Information technology is unfortunate that since the introduction of Steve Solomon´s great Organic Gardeners Composting dorsum in the 1980s, so many people accept followed his suggestions without reasoning them out. Mr. Solomon—unaware of how to correctly compost dog stools to destroy parasites—recommended that dog waste non be added to compost. Since then, most manufactures recommend the same. For 15 years, there have been sites on the internet that claim to be "composting" dog waste but are actually proposing the structure of modest sewage systems.

Aye, you tin can compost your pet´s poop.

This commodity is non about to teach you how to build a dog waste septic system. If you want to do that, you can go out and buy a butt and so there are about a hundred other sites on the internet that volition show you what to exercise. Sewage systems that require the purchase of big plastic containers and chemic inoculants are neither friendly to the environment nor friendly to your upkeep.

This article will tell you the benefits of correctly composting your domestic dog´s stool and as well tell y'all how to exercise it properly. If yous accept a cat, and you utilise biodegradable litter, her waste can exist added besides.

Dog poop should not be thrown in a bin and ignored. The problem is yours.

Domestic dog poop should not be thrown in a bin and ignored. The problem is yours.

Why Bother Composting Dog Waste?

Each year, tons of dog stool are thrown into trash cans and end upward in sanitary landfills. When domestic dog waste is composted, information technology becomes a nutrient that will meliorate your thousand and trees. When your soil is lacking in organic matter, no amount of chemical fertilizer you purchase is going to meliorate things the manner you lot want. The compost you produce, with the material you lot already have on hand (dog waste), will improve things the fashion yous want.

If you live in an apartment, I realize that this is not a viable option. Y'all have nowhere to compost and wouldn't have annihilation to do with the compost anyway.

Are there problems with using dog waste in compost?

There are some pathogens that can spread from dogs to humans. Nearly of the leaner will dice easily, and in The Humanure Handbook (Chapter 7, Worms and Affliction), the author says that roundworms tin survive for 90 days in a shady expanse.

The University of Minnesota did some research in this area and determined that in gild to destroy harmful worm eggs your compost would need to exceed 165 degrees for five days. The University of Oregon ran tests and determined that a compost pile that reached 130 degrees and was turned five times (at 3-day intervals) would no longer contain pathogens.

Do something about your dog´s poop.

Do something well-nigh your dog´s poop.

If you lot live in a suburb and only have a small infinite, you lot really demand to build or buy a compost system. I have added a plan here and there are numerous videos available on YouTube to assist y'all build a compost bin. If you lot demand further instructions on how to use this composting system, y'all can purchase an e-book called Humanure Toilet Instruction Transmission.

If your space is smaler and you want an easy composter, just use a trash can.

How Practise I Compost Dog Waste the Right Way?

You do not demand to buy a storage bin, you certainly practice not need to buy a chemical to add together to your compost mixture. The process is ridiculously simple.

  1. Mark the area where you will be composting. Some people volition need to practise it in a trash bin to relieve space, and if you accept a smaller dorsum g this is the best manner. If y'all need to save money notice an old trash bin that someone is throwing out--only drill holes around the side and in the bottom of the trash bin and put it in the place where you want to make your compost. (If you have a larger yard y'all might want to build a compost bin out of old wood or pallets that y'all can get for free; if you live on a farm just make a pile and do not even bother edifice a structure to hold the compost.)
  2. When yous pick up a shovel full of domestic dog stool, cover information technology with a shovel full of carbon material like grass clippings. (Since the carbon: nitrogen ratio of dog stool is well-nigh half dozen:one—similar to chicken manure and much better than moo-cow manure—you but need to add virtually one scoop of carbon material to comprehend ii scoops of stool.) I accept a friend who is a carpenter and so I always have access to wood shavings; that is what I use. If y'all want to use grass clippings that is fine, and since they rot rapidly they are even a better choice.
  3. Every few days (if you demand a rigid schedule do it every Monday and Th) toss a shovel full of erstwhile compost on to the pile so that there will exist beneficial bacteria to speed upwardly the digestion. If you are starting out, just use dirt from your garden. If you accept seen those other sites that tell you to purchase a product and dump it on top of your compost, do not buy! Those "starter leaner" are all plant in dirt and you do non demand to waste matter your money.
  4. Keep the pile moist; if yous have fish add their water when you are cleaning out their tank.
  5. Optional: If you really want to produce high quality compost, add together some worms. (This is called vermicomposting.) You lot will need to add together fruit peelings and coffee grounds equally an additional feed for the worms merely they will also eat the dog stool. They will produce a high quality fertilizer. By the time the worms accept consumed your domestic dog stool compost you will have high quality humus that will contain no pathogens. There are many articles available on how to farm red worms and if you want to get this direction you really should read more than. If you see any that tell you not to use dog waste, they are wrong. They are repeating wrong information.

An associate of mine has an organic coffee plantation; he maintains all of the plants only on humus produced by his worms. If you have purchased organic java at Starbucks or your grocery store then you already apply humus. If you utilize worms y'all will exist able to produce your ain.

If you are fecophobic, you can add dog waste in biodegradable bags to your compost heap. It is going to accept many more than years to return to soil if you utilize this method, and I certainly practice not suggest trying to add worms as they volition accept cypher to feed on.

Volition Medications in Dog Feces Touch on Worms or Insects?

Some dogs are given a monthly topical flea control or now take an oral flea command. These medications piece of work in several ways but well-nigh of them bear on the nervous organization of insects. Those that do non crusade the insect´s exoskeleton to non form correctly.

Heartworm preventatives like Heartgard contain ivermectin, a chemic that could potentially affect worms, but the concentration is very small and would be unlikely to have any event. Newer heartworm preventatives may have some result.

If y'all are willing to spend the time to compost your canis familiaris´s stool, I hope that y'all apply natural flea control instead of applying all the same another chemical to your dog.

Young papaya trees will thank you for the dog waste compost.

Young papaya trees will thank you for the canis familiaris waste product compost.

How to Use Dog Poop After Composting

I would not consume a teaspoonful of domestic dog waste compost. Neither would I eat a teaspoonful of humanure compost, craven manure compost, or even fresh dirt. If you accept maintained a proper composting organisation, the product will accept no pathogens, and I recommend it be used on your lawn, on ornamental bushes, and around your copse. I have virtually a dozen kokosnoot and many banana trees that are always searching for additional nutrients. If yous have fruit trees, a hedge, or a backyard, they will appreciate the compost and pay you back by flourishing.

The compost is ready to be used when it looks like regular soil. I cannot tell you an exact corporeality of time because it will vary depending on your environmental conditions. If you alive in the northern US, your compost heap volition not even heat upward during the wintertime; here in the torrid zone (and with a healthy worm population working on my compost), my pile is ordinarily prepare to spread in well-nigh three months. I have compost piles in several areas and tend to exit it longer.

If you want to destroy our environment by selfishly throwing your canis familiaris´s stool into landfills, flushing it down the toilet, or (even worse) buy a product that freezes the carrion before yous pick information technology up just so that the task will exist a little easier, perhaps you are not the blazon of person who should fifty-fifty be owning a canis familiaris.

Think about it.

All dogs produce waste, so get rid of it correctly.

All dogs produce waste material, so get rid of it correctly.

Questions & Answers

Question: I take had a puppy for 2 months now, and would like to compost its waste product. What do you do nigh the odor? The trash can smells pretty bad when poop is tied upward in disposal bags in it. Wouldn't the smell be worse if the poop were only loose in a compost pile? Also, in Indiana, I will probably have to use a bin, since a pile will be covered with snow in the winter.

Answer: Every bit long equally you use plenty of grass clippings to comprehend the dog stool each time you toss it on the compost, there is no odour. It does not stink similar the stool in the trash because it is covered up and starts breaking downwards as soon as you lot add it to the compost.

I use wood shavings to cover my pile, and in your area, you volition probably need to use leaves in the fall and wintertime.

I would not worry about the snow. The heat from the compost will probably melt the snow on top, and the moisture will leach into your compost. But keep a bag or pile of leaves next to your compost pile or bin to throw on top of the stool as you add information technology.

Question: I have four and sometimes more dogs. They produce ii-3 lbs of waste product daily, and are fed a primarily raw diet. Exercise I need to plough the compost pile? And if so, how often? Will I need whatever additional enzymes, or volition grass clippings, leaves and clay alone practice information technology?

Answer: You do not demand to add together enzymes or other additives. The material that you add will take bacteria that will allow the compost to develop naturally.

Aye, you need to plough it a few times until it is digested. I usually expect until the compost bin is total and and so plow the whole pile into my next bin. Do and so again in a month or two (depending on how warm it is where you are at.)

Question: Could I follow this guide for composting dog waste if I wanted to fix this in a big scale for a shelter holding well-nigh 50-60 dogs?

Answer: Yes, but y'all will take to be sure that you have an acceptable and consistent carbon source (like grass clippings or leaves). Some people go on a bale of straw next to the compost pile since it is available at all times.

If yous exercise not embrace the feces adequately each time it is added it will build up flies and will stink.

Question: Can forest ashes be used as a carbon production when composting dog feces?

Answer: Ashes are simply minerals that are left over after the carbon has been destroyed in the fire. They are nifty to add but should be layered on after you lot put down the dog feces and grass clippings or leaves (the carbon source).

Water will help the ashes mix into the compost. When your compost is full, and you are prepare to turn it into the next pile, the wood ashes will be mixed in even more. Your compost will be keen.

Question: I have considered this several times, but I live in Minnesota. Is at that place any bug yous see or modifications y'all would brand given that the compost bin will be frozen for several months of the yr?

Answer: I call back the primary affair you will have to account for is the cold will make the digestion procedure final a lot longer. I start a compost pile about every 3 months; if I were in your area I would not want to practise so more than in one case a yr. Allow the pile build so that information technology will heat up in the spring and summer and do non even think of using it until the compost appears to be digested dirt.

Question: You mention that it is bad for the surroundings to affluent dog poop down the toilet. Why, then, exercise the EPA, NRDC and National Association of Make clean Water Agencies recommend this method?

Respond: Compared to the enviornmental damage done by wrapping dog waste in plastic and adding information technology to an already overburdened landfill, flushing down a toilet is a better alternative. What happens though? The canis familiaris waste matter is added to an overburdened water treatment system, and information technology takes more resource to clean that h2o before it is pumped back into your home and then that you can drinkable it.

Do your local environment a favor. Practise not dump your dog waste in the trash and exercise not flush it into your toilet.

Question: Will dog compost work with a veggie patch?

Answer: That is up to you. Nothing in this world is 100% safe, and then in that location is e'er the possibility that a dog that is infected with parasites could infect the compost pile, it could not heat up properly or be turned, and could exist infected. If you are a normal healthy individual, in that location is going to be no trouble even if yous were to eat a viable roundworm egg.

If there are elderly people, children, or immunocompromised people eating in the vegetable patch though I think the dog compost should non be spread there. Information technology is always okay to spread information technology under trees, and you can spread it on a blossom garden too.

Question: Nosotros alive in Southern Cal so we would probably have to get the trash can route. Practice the lawn clippings used in composting take to be fresh? We don't mow the lawns every week, every 2 weeks, so I imagine we would take to stock pile some clippings before getting started. Also, practise you have to turn the mixture as it composts in the trash can? If and then, how oftentimes does the compost have to be turned and how long could we await the composting process to accept to be able to apply this in the planters?

Respond: If yous are using the trash can information technology is a good thought to keep a bale of straw next to your compost to add to keep your compost from clumping up. How often do you need to turn it? The more often the amend, at least once a week, but if you practise not plow it at all the compost will still work, simply take longer. With a trash tin can, it will have well-nigh 3 to six months, depending on how warm your surface area is. (Here in the torrid zone it takes about 3 months, probably will not be much longer in southern Cal.)

Question: My domestic dog poops more often than not on walks, and I don't have a yard to compost in. How can I transport it to the composting location from where she's pooped to discard of my domestic dog's waste responsibly?

Answer: Being responsible for an apartment dweller is difficult. You lot accept to discover out if the identify that composts even accepts dog waste matter, as many do not. If they volition accept it, the only proposition I would have is to haul it there in a plastic handbag (in the back of a car, or maybe in a little cherry-red railroad vehicle if the place is shut). It is not a skillful solution, and certainly not going to be easy, just it is the merely alternative.

Question: Can shredded paper be used every bit encompass?

Answer: Certainly, shredded paper is a good carbon source but it may take a little longer to develop as soil depending on how fine the paper is shredded.

If this is function-blazon newspaper in that location is going to exist no problems. If this is from newspapers you should remove the heavy printed inserts (the glossy pages) before use.

Question: My husband and I live in Key Oregon. We want to beginning a compost bin. Nosotros take ii dogs and a cat, so there is enough of poop around. All the same, we exercise not have a lawn or trees that lose their leaves. What else can we use? The copse we have are juniper.

Reply: Any carbon source can exist used to embrace your canis familiaris and cat waste. I recommend grass clippings since it rots quickly and is like shooting fish in a barrel to use. The needles from your evergreens tin be used too, but they have a lot more than time to interruption down, and so plan on leaving your compost bin for a lot longer before you can use the soil it will produce.

I use wood shavings in my compost since I do non have a backyard. (I have sheep that I let out each afternoon and they clip my lawn pretty shut, then I never have to mow.) Are bales of straw bachelor cheaply in your expanse after the wheat harvest? They also make a expert cover for compost.

If you have whatsoever stables in your region, ask what they utilize on the floor of the stalls. (A lot of stables will even give information technology away, and as a bonus, it has a lot of horse manure mixed in. It does have to exist hauled though so you have to drive a truck.)

Question: In his book entitled "How to Commencement a Worm Bin" Henry Owens states not to use "dog or cat poop" that it is "toxic" and that "flea-killing meds can be especially toxic". I would think that the chemicals would have long since cleaved down, since flea meds need to exist administered routinely or the dog is non protected. Would y'all speak to this?

Answer: People like Henry Owens are repeating stupid things they read from books and have no idea what is toxic. There is nix wrong with using dog fecal material since, every bit you point out, any trace amount of chemical would have broken down in the months that the compost is decomposing. Even if at that place were a trace left in the feces, none of the flea preventatives are toxic to worms or lower worm fertility.

Question: I made a DIY dog composer out of a storage tote. Following directions from the pet projection, I added Roebic septic treatment to spring-outset the microbes. Unfortunately during the procedure of adding the septic starter my lovely dog bumped me and I vicious in the pigsty, so the entire bottle of septic starter was added. The bottle says information technology is used to treat up to 500 gallons. I do not program on using the compost at all. Should I be concerned?

Answer: I am not familiar with that brand because I never buy those septic starters. They are not necessary since they are only bacteria. Bacteria are everywhere, and when I get-go a compost heap I throw on a little soil (which, by the fashion, contains bacteria).

There is nothing incorrect with that compost and y'all tin apply it when information technology is fix. That 500 gallon number means nothing as information technology is just a number made up past someone at the manufactory. No, you should not exist concerned.

Question: My compost just gets afternoon dominicus (we want to hide it from total view of our patio then it'south behind a shed). Will this nevertheless piece of work?

Answer: Sure. The oestrus that builds upward and destroys the parasites is from the decomposition of organic materials and has nothing to practise with the sun.

Make sure you lot plough it ofttimes enough and monitor the heat in the pile.

Question: Can y'all dispose of dog poop in your toilet?

Answer: Yes, and it is like shooting fish in a barrel to do, ecologically irresponsible, and causes a heavy piece of work load on the sewage system of the municipality in which you lot live.

This is no better than dumping your plastic numberless full of canis familiaris poop into your landfill, and non a good thing to practice.

Question: I take 2 goats and 7 dogs. Can I utilise soiled hay/harbinger equally chocolate-brown affair?

Answer: Yep, if you toss the soiled straw on top of the dog feces each day your compost heap is going to be even better. I am not certain if y'all have much of an outcome with flies where you live so you may need to toss another carbon fabric (like grass clippings) on superlative of the muddied harbinger if this is a trouble for you.

Question: Tin I use equus caballus manure to throw on top of the compost instead of dirt ?

Respond: Sure, the equus caballus manure is a expert source of bacteria and another adept nitrogen source. You still need to go on a pile of leaves, a bale of harbinger, or a pile of grass clippings next to the compost though to toss on afterward you add the horse manure.

Question: I accept grass clippings from weekly mowing, but I besides apply wooden shavings from big box stores for my dogs and change information technology out regularly. Do I need sawdust type shavings or would these larger blazon of clippings likewise work? They are more similar "chips", as each piece is typically 1 inch long by one-half and inch wide; will that work? Besides would cedar fries exist detrimental to the composting process?

Respond: I use wooden shavings also since I am in an area where people practise not have lawns. (The ones I go are from a thickness planer, and so it sounds similar to what y'all use.) They work fine, but take a picayune longer to interruption down than grass clippings. (They do not clump like grass clippings either so are really easier to utilize in a compost heap.)

I accept never used cedar chips but I see no reason why it would affect your compost negatively.

Question: Is the canis familiaris compost bin attractive to rats?

Answer: No, unless you are calculation another component that rats can consume, like basic, meat, and household garbage.

Grace, I certainly would not recommend information technology. Foxes and raccoons, unlike our dogs, are heavily parasitized and much more likely to pass eggs in their stools. If you lot are going to practice so, I would have a separate pile that would only used every two years (and only on flower beds, non the garden).

Grace on Baronial 11, 2022:

I have foxes in my garden that poo everywhere. tin I add their faeces to the compost? it has a lot of worms in information technology.... eeeeek

Dr Marking (author) from The Atlantic Rain Forest, Brazil on August 01, 2022:

amlacy---as far as I know there are no studies on this, only the amount of ivermectin and pyrantel pamoate in heartgard is very small and I exercise not think it would make any difference to a vermicomposter. The other newer heartworm preventatives are another matter, simply I do not know of whatever universities that are looking into this.

amlacy75 on July 31, 2022:

Very helpful commodity. You touched on the bear on of flea/tick medication on the ability to vermicompost dog waste simply there would seem to be a more obvious issue with the common apply of monthly heartworm medication (such as Heartguard), which are intended to impale other parasitic worms as well. I take seen conflicting things almost these medications in plow killing vermicomposting worms used for domestic dog waste. Whatsoever advice would he appreciated. Thanks.

For so long I believed that domestic dog poo isn't proficient for composting. Thanks to this article, I run into that it can really contribute to our environment then long as it's done correctly. Skilful to know.

Vivid! I never considered composting canis familiaris waste. We have many livestock guardian dogs here at home and so this volition make good employ of their waste product. I only wish I had found this informative well written article sooner!

It never crossed my mind every bit an option, so at present I feel a bit foolish for never trying!

I had this thought of decomposing my dog'due south poop for quite a long fourth dimension. Could brand time to research on net this Quarantine. Information put up here is of great guidance. I volition get-go implementing n volition surely Go dorsum with my personal feel on it. Thanks a ton

Sarah on July xv, 2022:

Before you judge the edible chemical parasite control for dogs please go on in mind why they are used. I live in CT and nosotros are a hotbed for Lyme. I have quite a few friends with the dibilitating disease and have had a canis familiaris with kidney harm because of it. I would rather give my pup medicine that will impale tiny affliction conveying deer ticks than have her suffer through Lyme disease.

Dr Mark (author) from The Atlantic Pelting Forest, Brazil on June 26, 2022:

Cynthia, there are a lot of biodegradable cat litters available. You merely take to bank check around.

The problem with cat "dooky" is a parasite chosen toxoplasmosis. That parasite is the reason gardeners become upset about cats going in their garden, and moms go upset about cats going in their kid´s sandbox. It should exist destroyed with composting, but but to be sure I would not employ true cat compost in the garden. It would be fine to use in the yard, effectually the trees, etc.

Thanks for taking the fourth dimension to enquire.

Cynthia Scott on June 26, 2022:

We're cat owners, and so would capeesh a bit more than info on composting cat waste. I don't recall seeing any kitty litter labelled biodegradable, so what do nosotros expect for? Are there whatever special differences in cat dooky (another affiche's discussion, I dear it) that would cause us to change whatever of your directions?

Dr Marker (author) from The Atlantic Rain Forest, Brazil on May 21, 2022:

The diet matters a lot too. When I am able to feed merely raw, the feces is very dry out and easy to clean up. When I accept to use commercial nutrient the stool is a mess and then it is improve to leave it a little longer and let the sun dry it out.

Thanks for stopping by.

Sherry Venegas from La Verne, CA on May 20, 2022:

This info helps. We have a slope that our dog uses, only the surface area inappreciably gets scooped upwards. I how experience perfectly comfortable picking up the sunbaked poop and tossing it in the compose bin.

Dr Mark (writer) from The Atlantic Rain Forest, Brazil on May 05, 2022:

Pamela, that is a good thought simply if I was using lime, and non wood ashes, I would want to have a soil examination done to see if the pH changes are worth the extra price.

If you are just spreading the compost effectually your flowers, it is probably non.

Wood ashes though, if free, are an excellet add-on to improve the quality of your compost.

Pamela on May 04, 2022:

What about the add-on of some befouled lime to keep the poop from stinking and to hasten good for you rot? Befouled lime sold at the local Tractor Supply, or Subcontract and Garden type store is cheap. Fancy pelleted garden lime tin be quite expensive, so thats non what you want to use. Besides, woods ashes can be used in place of barn lime.

Dr Mark (author) from The Atlantic Pelting Forest, Brazil on August 31, 2022:

JS MysMan--wow, 200 dogs! That volition be a lot of work, simply can too exist an excellent source. Every bit far as flies, there is no problem as long equally you lot cover the feces as soon every bit information technology is put down each day. You lot can employ grass clippings, wood shavings, former leaves, harbinger, etc. If the shelter cannot obtain adequate grass clippings y'all tin can buy a few bales of straw and get out them next to the compost. Instruct the persons cleaning the pens to break open a flake of straw and spread it on the feces each time it is added.

One of your main bug will also exist what to do with then much compost. In that location is a limit to how much can be added to a lawn, but if you lot besides use vermicomposting you lot can give information technology away to the volunteers at the shelter to take home and spread under their copse.

Best of luck. Let me know if y'all take any questions I tin aid you with as you lot go along with your beauteous project.

JS MysMan on August 31, 2022:

Hullo

I accept been asked to aid a dog shelter (approx. 200 small to medium sized dogs) with a landscaping plan. I need to figure out a way to dispose of the dog poop in an environmentally friendly way. I am thinking of using the pile method and giving them iii piles. One of new poop, one maturing and ane gear up. They are concerned about flies while the piles are maturing. What tin can be done to mitigate that?

Dr Mark (author) from The Atlantic Rain Forest, Brazil on May 29, 2022:

As far as the worms and the chickens, I cannot imagine in that location would be whatsoever problems. My chickens eat a lot worse, and eat the worms and beatles out of the stool from my dogs and livestock.

I am not sure how thick it can be, but when information technology rains or you h2o information technology the grass is going to exist exposed so it will start growing through. I would call back you would take to put iv or 5 inches on top to create a problem.

Two months is great. I recall you can permit the dogs on there as soon equally it moves down into the soil a fleck, a week or and so.

Skillful luck digging that next pit. Fun, huh?

bone2bwild on May 28, 2022:

Dr, Mark thanks sooo much! I left the mulch pit for 2 months before pulling information technology all out and putting it on the grass, so tin can the dogs go alee have admission? I saw your moving picture of the 3 pits, I only have enough room for i more and i volition be digging that this week-keen thought by the way, no downwardly time :) . When putting it on the grass, (St. Augustine past the way) if I encompass the top of the grass top with too much mulch, will information technology kills the grass? (seems like it volition, so I will exist careful not besides). Your info is INVALUABLE!!! So glad I establish your site!! So many said don't put in the poop!!!

Last questions (for now lol) Gave a friend with chickens a five gallon saucepan with a bunch of worms-is it okay for her chickens to swallow the worms?

Dr Marker (author) from The Atlantic Rain Woods, Brazil on May 28, 2022:

bone2bwild--how long ago did you stop adding feces before you took it out and spread it on the grass? If information technology had been several months, no trouble as the parasite eggs, if whatsoever, would accept all been destroyed. If you added it until the concluding mean solar day then in that location is more than likelihood of there being parasite eggs in the compost, and the ground where you spread it has to be kept "dog free" even . At that place is controversy on how long, but at least several months.

I would stop worrying about wetting it. It will non heat up whatever more once spread out. The earthworms probably left plenty of egg packages in the compost that was left in the pit, and so you will not demand to add any after.

Not sure if that muck in the middle is heating upwards or not. I would spread it on plants where the dogs do not accept access. A bloom bed? I would not worry about the rocks.

Information technology sounds like you have already washed a great chore. I am glad someone out at that place is thinking about the right thing to do!

bone2bwild on May 28, 2022:

I run a domestic dog 24-hour interval care and created a four' wide, 4' deep mulch pit in the ground. I take been filling and turning it for 1.5 years, with cuttings, clay and poop. There were thousands of worms . Yesterday it was ready to empty. I put all of it on the grass yard areas and fenced off those areas so no dogs can get to them. Couple questions: Now that information technology is on the grass, proceed it wet? How long until the dogs tin play on it again? Was I supposed to look for the worms to burrow dorsum into the ground inside the mulch pit before putting on the grass? I also have a lot of gravel and rocks, and lots of the rocks and gravel ended up in the mulch pit-not gonna remove rocks and gravel form dogs poop lol is that a problem? I have my sink water running into the pit to go on information technology moist, simply all the water kind of drops into a fundamental area of the pit, so I have a lot of "black dirt-like" goo-should this not be used? It looks and smells funny, not like the balance of the pit-that mulch looked and smelled amazing!

Dr Mark (author) from The Atlantic Rain Wood, Brazil on May 08, 2022:

Aaron, the parasite eggs, if there are any, would still exist present for that calendar month. As far as spreading, however, this is non possible. If you were to eat the compost before it was ready you could become infected.

What is the solution? Do not eat it. At the moment I have my compost piles in a low area of my garden. When it does rain, the water is non going to rise up to the level of my peanuts and sweet potatoes, much less to the height of my corn. Your thought of putting the compost pile where the excess runs to the river is excellent.

If your dogs are costless from internal parasites this is not even an result. All you accept to do is let the pile warm upwards enough to destroy the bacteria in the feces. Fourth dimension volition also do this, and I take several piles so I always leave my compost unitl it is quite old anyway.

Thanks for reading. I appreciated your comments.

No comments for a while just great advice. We are trying to find a way to properly dispose of our dog waste matter. They can fine people in our town for left out domestic dog waste matter even in your yard. Nosotros live shut to rivers, beaches and the concern over parasites is their reason. They say to throw information technology out in our trash however. I see that equally adding to a problem, it could just pollute h2o elsewhere. Likewise we compost anyhow to reduce waste matter and what goes into landfills. Flushing would add to our septic which would pollute anyways, So we figured there must be a safe mode to comprise it, impale the parasites, and ultimately compost information technology so it'south safe.

My but question and business organisation is composting with drainage holes, if it takes a month or longer to reach the temps of 130-165* to kill the parasites would that still be rubber during that period or is there a risk of parasites spreading until they're destroyed? That'south the only upside to the septic system I see is containment. So the main reason I desire to compost is to prevent parasites from spreading, is that the best option for that?

Nosotros are planning a spot for this away from our food gardens, our normal compost pile, and where the h2o runs down to the river the all-time possible.

As we now have my girl's chocolate labrador visiting occasionally, this makes for interesting reading.

As a pet owner in an flat complex in Huntsville, Alabama, I am wondering how to properly compost my domestic dog'due south waste material. The only composting facilities are in TN and GA, and I do non know if they take dog waste. Furthermore, the cost with properly transporting said waste makes that option infeasible. I suppose I volition have to effigy out via YouTube and other materials how to build my own very small anaerobic digestion device / composting apparatus. It is a pity that the majority of canis familiaris owners here but get out their poop on the grass, and that this volition not probable change without a LOT of effort.

Dr Marker (author) from The Atlantic Pelting Woods, Brazil on Baronial 31, 2022:

Thank you for reading! Imagine all of those dogs up in Alaska. What a lot of poo.

Barbara Fitzgerald from Georgia on August 31, 2022:

I accept a compost heap and plenty of poo - I I'g happy to give this a try. Thanks for the groovy hub - it makes sense to me!

Dr Mark (author) from The Atlantic Rain Forest, Brazil on November 05, 2022:

Thanks for your great comments. There are not nigh plenty people cognizant of just how important this effect is. Well-nigh pet owners just think throwing it in the trash makes the trouble go away!!!

Rule 56 on November 05, 2022:

Finally some sensible communication nigh composting pet poop. You're spot on. Healthy dogs don't produce diseased waste. Even if they did, the temperature and microbial competition in the compost pile volition kill any pathogen-laden poop. Composting the waste is the only responsible way to dispose of it. Glad to see someone else out the advocating information technology.

Dr Marker (author) from The Atlantic Rain Wood, Brazil on Oct twenty, 2022:

Thanks I gear up my "featured hubs" a lilliputian differently, and am non sure that would work. I am thinking about irresolute it a piffling, though, so will keep this in mind.

Jesse Mugnier from Bailiwick of jersey on October 20, 2022:

No problem I'1000 glad I could help! Since posting this annotate yesterday, I did a niggling experiment. I had my most popular hub equally my start "featured" hub on my contour page. I took that down last night and put up one of my hubs that was not as popular and had the 'traffic failing' triangle next to it.

The result: My not as popular hub is no longer losing traffic and had more views. My most pop hub had a 'traffic failing' triangle, with not as many views as usual.... Might be a skilful thought to feature this hub if you really desire more people to see it.

Dr Marking (writer) from The Atlantic Rain Woods, Brazil on October xix, 2022:

Thanks for the tip. I merely added five new tags with "garden" and likewise added some that accept goose egg to exercise with domestic dog waste, like "how to compost". I appreciate you taking the time to help.

Jesse Mugnier from Jersey on October xix, 2022:

Hey DrMark, I merely read this, and it is really interesting! I know we talked near tags, maybe yous should include a tag about gardening somehow, considering yous practise mention that this is "a food that will better your yard and trees". Just a thought... :)

Dr Mark (author) from The Atlantic Rain Forest, Brazil on August 02, 2022:

No, anthrax sporulates. I think y'all can destroy the spores by warm heat but I would take to research information technology.

DoItForHer on August 02, 2022:

Interesting. What is the life phase of Anthrax that tin survive for years in the soil? I thought that was the prion.

Dr Mark (author) from The Atlantic Pelting Forest, Brazil on August 02, 2022:

Toxoplasmosis cysts should be destroyed only equally easily as toxocara (roundworm) cysts.

No research has been done on prions, simply I suppose that they would exist very easy to kill in compost. Much easier than other organisms, in fact.

DoItForHer on August 01, 2022:

How well does that work on prions?

Depending on where you live and how your sewage arrangement works, flushing cat dooky can transmit toxoplasmosis to other animals. Otters are especially susceptible.

Dr Mark (writer) from The Atlantic Rain Woods, Brazil on July 31, 2022:

Hey wetnosedogs this seems tailor-made for your state of affairs! I can just imagine how many bags of dog food y'all go through in a month.

Dr Marking (author) from The Atlantic Rain Forest, Brazil on July 31, 2022:

Hullo Dirt Farmer! There are as many misconceptions about the use of dog poo every bit there are about the utilise of humanure. Even if you do non measure out the temperature of your compost pile, turning it oft should provide adequate mixture of any pathogenic organisms. Fifty-fifty if you lot do not want to plough it, using the dog waste matter compost as a worm bed volition provide you enough of nearly-sterile humus to utilise on your garden. Fifty-fifty if you don´t trust your worms, you tin use the humus/compost on your lawn and hedges. And living in Maryland, your compost pile is going to be inactive during the wintertime then if I were you lot I would simply harvest and utilize the humus twice a yr (belatedly jump and early fall).

Thank you for the comment Mary. I know my Maltese does not provide enough stool for a big heap only with my Pit Bull the state of affairs is quite different. Leaving information technology in the yard is non good though considering it attracts flies. If you collected it and threw it in a corner, and then covered information technology with a little grass each day, in a few years there would exist soil there and it would never smell nor describe flies. I realize it does not seem necessary but it is a ameliorate culling.

wetnosedogs from Alabama on July 31, 2022:

Very interesting hub. Something I didn't know at all.

Jill Spencer from U.s. on July 31, 2022:

Geez. I don't know! Sometimes compost doesn't heat up enough to kill weed seeds, although it looks okay. Tin I be sure my compost is hot enough to kill the pathogens in canis familiaris poo without taking the compost'southward temperature?

Mary Hyatt from Florida on July 31, 2022:

Wow! I only learned something new today. Thanks for all this great info. My miniature schnauzer poops near the size of a pencil, thank goodness. She has her very own private large grand. I just leave it at that place. Maybe I'thou wrong.

I voted this Up, etc. and will share.

Dr Mark (author) from The Atlantic Pelting Forest, Brazil on July 31, 2022:

I forgot to add, thanks for your visit! I want to get this bulletin out to every bit many people as possible and was really disappointed at all the bad suggestions I saw on the net. Thanks once more for taking the fourth dimension to read this.

Dr Mark (author) from The Atlantic Rain Forest, Brazil on July 31, 2022:

That is a much better way to dispose of it than a landfill, but fifty-fifty human waste product that is sent to a sewage treatment plant is wasted (another pun!). I don´t know how big your yard is but I practise know you utilize organic products; do your purchase chemical fertilizers for your lawn? Your Schnauzer´south waste could be used in place of those fertilizers and at the same time you would be decreasing the brunt on your towns sewage handling arrangement.

Jaye Denman from Deep South, USA on July 31, 2022:

This is interesting, simply since my dog uses our back yard for her potty place, I just "scoop the poop" from the ground and flush it down the toilet in my bath. This eliminates (sorry well-nigh the pun) the need to toss it in the trash. Works for me.
